Introducing the New Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Vehicle

2016 Toyota MiraiToyota’s breakthrough fuel cell vehicle, the 2016 Mirai, is here. Fuel cell technology powers cars with hydrogen instead of gasoline or other alternative fuels. Toyota has spent the past two decades researching, developing, and testing this technology, and the end result is this astounding car.

Innovative Design

A vehicle this innovative couldn’t have just any old look. The Mirai has a space-age feel, and Toyota has taken each styling detail and engineered it for aerodynamics and the modern lifestyle. The exterior includes crisp LED headlamps with automatic high beams, wide-angle fog lamps for added visibility, and touch-sensor door handles for locking and unlocking the car quickly and easily. The inside of the Mirai contains acoustic noise-reducing glass on the front windows and windshield, creating a peaceful environment. The heated power-tilt and telescoping steering wheel and high-end audio system with available integrated mobile phone apps, navigation, and music streaming are bonus conveniences.

Inner Beauty

The Mirai’s engine structure is totally different from anything you’ve ever seen and leverages many of Toyota’s existing technologies. Its Power Control Unit is based on the one found in the Prius and is super-efficient when it comes to using stored energy from the battery or drawing it from the fuel cell stack. The fuel cell stack is where the hydrogen is combined with oxygen from the outside air coming in through the front grille. The Mirai’s electric motor is from a Lexus hybrid, and the battery is from one of Toyota’s top-performing hybrids. All of the pieces work in harmony to create electricity, send it to the motor, and release the leftover water through the tailpipe. The total performance delivers 152 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque with zero emissions.

Driving Range

Fueling the Mirai is a simple five-minute process, and as fuel cell technology catches on, hydrogen fueling centers will become more widespread. The Mirai has an EPA-rated range of 312 miles and achieves an estimated 67 mpg combined city/highway.
